Conwy Suspension Bridge & Conwy Castle |
Wednesday 9th May 2012
Woke this morning to another cloudy day, temperature a very cold
6°. We have not seen much sun so far in Wales.
We decided to drive north to the coast and visit Conwy. Walked
part of the city walls which were originally part of Conwy Castle, another one
of the 14 castles built by Edward I.
Right next to the Castle is the Conwy suspension Bridge, another
designed and built by Thomas Telford in 1826. The bridge is now only for
pedestrians so we walked across and back to take some photos.
Lynne outside he smallest house |
Next we headed down to the Quay and saw the smallest house in
Great Britain, which measures 3metres high by 1.8 metres wide. Lynne went inside and could just stand in the
bottom level. There was a steep ladder used to access the upper level, which
contained a narrow bed. Apparently a 6ft tall fisherman once lived in the house. We walked back to the town centre
and went into Aberconwy House- a 14th century merchant’s house that
is thought to be the oldest townhouse in Wales.
Bruce on Great Orme Tram |
We walked around the outside of the Castle but it was starting to
rain so we jumped back in the car and headed to Llandudno.
We bought tickets for the Orme Tramway, Britains only cable hauled
street Tramway. Great ride up a very steep hill. You have to change trams half
way up in order to get to the top. It was so cold at the top on the Orme that
we came back down on the next tram. By this time the rain was getting heavier
so we got back into the car (which was warm) and headed to the Trefriw woollen
mills to see the weaving and look around the shop.
Dinner tonight was at the Gwydr Hotel, roast lamb with mint sauce.
We set off tomorrow for The Lakes, hopefully the weather will improve.
