Glasgow Cathedral |
Tuesday 15th May 2012
The weather is getting better. This morning was a little overcast
but it had cleared during the afternoon to some sunny blue sky. Temperature was
still a rather cool 13°.
No driving today, we left the car parked outside our guesthouse
and caught the ‘hop on hop off’ bus for a tour around Glasgow.
First stop was the Riverside Museum, Scotland’s Museum of
Transport & Travel. The museum houses all sorts of exhibits on transport
such as an original subway train carriage, old steam locomotives and many motor
vehicles dating from the early 1900’s to current day vehicles. It was amazing
to see a gray Vanguard just like my Grandfather used to own. All in all a very
interesting place.
Back on the bus to Glasgow Cathedral and the Necropolis. The
Cathedral has a fantastic array of stained glass windows and a large pipe
organ. The Necropolis is a large cemetery up the hill from the Cathedral where
all the important people in Glasgow are buried. We also saw the oldest house in
Glasgow.
Kelvingrove Museum & Art Gallery |
After a quick lunch we boarded the bus for the trip back across
the city to Kelvingrove Museum & Art Gallery. We spent the rest of the afternoon
wandering around the exhibits, which include fossils found in the mountains and
lochs in Scotland. They also have a fully restore Mk 21 Spitfire hanging in the
main hall area. We could have spent a lot more time here.
Walked back to our guesthouse and then headed out for dinner at
the Crabshakk, a fish restaurant. After on entre of scallops for Lynne and
oysters for me we both had fish & chips, which were excellent.
