Snow on mountains at Glencoe |
Wednesday 16th May 2012
Opened the curtains this morning to clear blue sky with
temperature about 10°. By the time we had finished breakfast the weather had
changed to overcast sky with small hail falling!!
Packed the car, checked out of the Alamo Guest House and headed
north for the Isle of Skye. By this time the weather had improved and by the
time we stopped to take photos at Glencoe there was some blue sky appearing.
There was plenty of snow on the mountaintops and cloud surrounding Ben Nevis,
(the tallest mountain in Scotland) although we could still see it. Scenery was
stunning.
Driving onto the Ferry |
After a light lunch at the Glencoe Visitor Centre we set of for Mallaig
to travel over the sea to Skye. Mallaig is the car ferry boarding port for the
crossing onto the Isle of Skye. We drove onto the ferry at 3:10PM for the
45-minute crossing, which was very smooth, however the weather had again closed
in and there was light rain all the way across. The ferry docked at Armadale
and we drove the 800 metres to our Hotel, The Ardvasar, for the night. The
Ardvasar was built in the early 1800’s but our room is very good with great
views across the Sound of Sleat from the window.
Ardvasar Hotel & Main Street |
The Village of Ardvasar is very small with only one shop, which is
also the post office. We walked from one
end of the village to the other in about 10 minutes.
We had an excellent seafood dinner in the Hotel dining room and finished
it off with a wee dram to wash down the cheese and biscuits. Lynne had a glass (or
2) of wine as she does not have a taste for whiskey (without dry ginger ale).
An excellent way to end the day.
