Stairs down from our Castle room

Tuesday 22nd May 2012
The weather gods were smiling on us again today. Woke this morning to clear blue sky. Temperature was in the high 20’s. Just perfect for sight seeing.
Checked out of Lumley Castle about 9:30AM and headed still further south to Durham.

Durham Cathedral

Parked the car and caught the Park & ride bus into the city centre to visit the beautiful Durham Cathedral. Building of the Cathedral started in 1093 and until 1539 it was the church of the Benedictine Monastery.
Back in the car for a short trip to West Cornforth to follow-up on more of my family history. Unfortunately we had no success as according to the Post Master who has lived in West Cornforth all his life the North East Railway Cottages and the Old West Cornforth railway station were demolished many years ago. We did see the remains of what looked like a station platform and some old railway lines.

City of Truro
Next stop was Shildon Rail museum to see if we could track down the ‘City of Truro’ locomotive. No luck at Shildon, however museum staff checked and told us it was at York. As luck would have it our next stop is York where we will be spending 3 nights.
Arrived in York about 3:00PM, checked into Elliots B&B Hotel, unpacked the car, and set off on the short walk to the National Rail Museum. After asking some of the Museum staff we finally succeeded in finding ‘The City of Truro’ in one of the yards. Looks like it is being prepared for an outing as its tender was full of coal and a hose was filling the water tank. A very helpful staff member told us that it is being prepared for the upcoming Railfest 2012 in early June and they are bringing in rail record-breaking locomotives from all over the country to York. The staff member said to come back tomorrow, as we may be able to get a closer look and take some more photos.

Lynne on the City Wall in York
After a very interesting 1½ hours wandering round the museum we walked back into the city, had dinner and went for a short walk along the City Wall.
