Walking along Hadrian's wall |
Monday 14th May 2012
Heavy rain and strong winds overnight. This morning was cloudy and
cold but no rain.
We checked out of our Guesthouse about 9:30AM and headed further
north towards Scotland. First stop was Greenhead (east of Carlisle) to view
part of Hadrian’s wall at Walltown Quarry- walked beside a section of the wall
and nearly got blown away by strong cold winds. The wall was originally built
by the Romans to separate the Romans from the Barbarians to the north.
Carlisle Castle |
Back in the car to warm up, we then drove into Carlisle for a
visit to Carlisle Castle. The Castle is over 900 years old and has been a fortress,
residence, prison and a military training centre over the years. Very interesting.
Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in the Castle for a time.
Continued on to Glasgow, arriving about 4:30PM, and checked into
The Alamo Guest House where we will be staying for the next two nights.
Had a great meal at the Islay Inn including a “wee dram” them
walked around the park and back to our guest house.
