White Horse at Kilburn |
Thursday 24th May 2012
Another glorious day- blue sky (some haze), no wind and
temperature reached 26°. Almost a heat wave with lots of locals out sitting in
parks soaking up the sunshine.
We set off this morning to see some of the Yorkshire countryside.
First stop was Kilburn to see the large white chalk horse carved
into the hillside, and to visit the
Mouseman Visitor Centre. The Mouseman produces individually hand made furniture
(really very expensive, a serviette ring costs £32.00 each). On each piece is
carved a small mouse, hence the name Mouseman.
Scripps Funeral Services |
Next on the list today was Goathland on the Yorkshire Moor.
Goathland has been made famous as Aidensfield in the TV series “Heartbeat”. For
all you ‘Heartbeat’ fans we saw Scripps Funeral Service, Aidensfield Garage and
the Aidensfield Pub where we had lunch. Walked to the station in time to see a steam
train pulling into the station. Goathland is a very lovely little Yorkshire
village.
Whitby Harbour |
Back in the car and onto Whitby where the HMS Endeavour was built
and Captain Cook served his apprenticeship. There is also a monument to Captain
Cook on the headland.
Great Hall in Castle Howard |
To finish the day we decided to look at one more castle, Castle
Howard. The castle was built over 300 years ago by the Howard family, who still
live there. The castle was used as the setting for the TV series “Brideshead
Revisited”. A very beautiful castle with lovely gardens - we would have loved
more time there.
Drove back to York and had dinner in the Hole in the Wall pub.
Looks like beautiful weather and a fantastic day!
