Another early start as we had to have
breakfast and be at Grayline Coaches meeting point outside the Hauptbahnhof at
8:30am for our trip to the Eagles Nest.
Weather is excellent again today, clear
blue sky, no wind and expected maximum of 24°.
The bus trip to The Eagles Nest is about 3 hours and we had to
take a detour to drop another tour group off at a Castle on the way.
Arrived at the car & bus stop about 11:30am where we had to
change to a special bus to drive the 6km long road designed specially for the
Eagles Nest.
We then had to walk through a 124m long tunnel, which led to a
vertical lift shaft for the last 124m to the top. The lift carriage is original
and was built for Adolf Hitler. It is panelled in brass.
Built on top of Kehlstein Mountain, Eagles Nest is 1,834m above
sea level and was completed in 1938. It was presented to Adolf Hitler by the
National Socialist Party (NS) as a 50th birthday present. Several
thousand workers were involved and construction took place under extreme
conditions at a cost of 30 million Reichmarks.
Had lunch at the restaurant at the car/bus park and then visited
the bunker, which is just below the Eagles Nest near the car park, before
boarding the bus for the return trip. We arrived back in Munich just after
7:00pm.
As it is our last night in Munich, we had dinner in our favorite
pub Paulaner Im Tal. Schnitzel & salad then apple strudel with custard.
