2016
Weather today is a much cooler 18° with a few showers.
Breakfast at 7:30am.
The ship arrived in Dürnstein at 7:00am, a quaint little town in the Wachau
Valley, which is famous for its white wines and apricot products including
schnapps and liquor.
As we approached Dürnstein we could see
the ruins of Dürnstein Castle high above the town,
which is where Richard the Lionheart was held captive by Leopold V of Austria
for 2 years.
We spent a wonderful 2 hours
walking through the town before boarding the ship at 10:30am.
After a light lunch we had a
local product tasting of all things apricot, Schnapps, jam, liquor and roasted
apricot kernels coated in chocolate and a BBQ sauce.
Docked in Melk about 2pm and
then were taken by bus up the hill for a guided tour of Melk Abbey. The Abbey
is very large and still has an active school with 900 students. We decided to
walk back to the ship as it was all down hill. Got back to the ship about
5:30pm and the ship sailed at 6:45pm.
While we were having dinner
with Desmond & Alan the ship went through a lock, which was very
interesting.
We are still doing lots of
walking and have averaged 8klms per day since starting our amazing journey.
